Online writing workshop for directors
Writing is an essential part of filmmaking. It’s also an ongoing process that keeps evolving throughout the production of any given film, be it documentary or fiction.
As we all know, filmmakers are also usually required to write in order to finance one’s film, a task that many consider to be a producer’s job. However, while that is true to some extent, no producer can write a funding application without a clear vision from the director. The writing always starts with the director, who then continues to hold, transform and amend her/his vision throughout the entire filmmaking process. And here is where writing for film - solely a director’s task - goes hand in hand with writing applications.
What we would therefore like to do with the forthcoming edition of B2B Doc online writing workshop is to equip directors with the necessary skills as well as the mind-set to clearly be able to communicate their ideas on paper. An ongoing process that should make the job of producer easier and more effective.
TIMEFRAME: Online sessions - both group and individual - to span across the month of October 2022.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 10-12 (directors)
AIM OF THE WORKSHOP:
To receive thorough guidance on writing treatments for documentary films, mainly for the purposes of filmmaking in general but also for applications to funds and pitching forums.
At the end of the workshop, the participants will have produced a full film treatment that works as a blueprint for future filming or post-production but can equally be used as solid basis for funding applications.
REQUREMENTS:
a documentary film in development with existing research material already in place (can be early development but at least some filmed material must be in place)
SELECTION PROCESS
Participants of the workshop will be selected from regular submissions to our database.
However, we will also need a letter of motivation outlining your specific needs in terms of writing:
As already mentioned, while the workshop will focus on writing as an essential part of the filmmaking process in general, writing for specific applications go hand in hand. Therefore, should you like to put a particular focus on specific applications, i.e. Sundance or IDFA Bertha fund, please specify that in your motivation letter.
