OPEN LETTER
to:
Stefan Löfven, Prime Minister of Sweden
Sauli Niinistö, President of Finland
Kersti Kaljulaid, President of Estonia
Raimonds Vējonis, President of Latvia
Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of Lithuania
Andrzej Duda, President of Poland
Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany
Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus
Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine
Pavel Filip, Prime Minister of Moldova
Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of Georgia
Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia

We the undersigned are documentary filmmakers, united in the Baltic to Black Sea Documentary Network, B2B Doc.  The reason why we appeal to you right now is the tragic fate of our colleague, Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov.  The Russian occupational forces in Crimea arrested him in 2014. He was accused of terrorism and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

There is no single piece of evidence indicating that Oleg has committed any crime, but a lot of evidence of how his case was manipulated by Russian authorities. All these years Oleg has been struggling for truth and freedom. Two weeks ago, exactly 4 years since he was arrested, Oleg Sentsov started a hunger strike in prison, demanding freedom for all Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia.

We all know that Oleg is ready to die for freedom, but that would be too high a price to pay. And a human life means nothing and costs nothing for the Russia’s ruling regime. But your governments have political and diplomatic channels to put pressure on Russia. Please do your best to find a solution that would make it possible for the Kremlin to release Oleg Sentsov from prison. He is now in his third week of hunger strike; his condition is getting critical. Every day counts.

It is clear that the fate of Oleg Sentsov is in the hands of only one person, sitting in Kremlin. We all hope that you and your Governments will find ways to persuade him not to make yet another tragic mistake and cause the death of yet another innocent human being.
